What is Apical Resection?

Apical resection is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the infected or inflamed part of the tooth root. It is commonly performed after a failed root canal treatment or in cases of cyst formation at the root tip. With this method, the problem area is cleaned without the need for tooth extraction, thereby extending the tooth's lifespan.

How is Apical Resection Performed?

1. Examination and Imaging
   X-rays are taken to determine the location and size of the infection.

2. Local Anesthesia
   The procedure area is numbed to ensure a painless experience for the patient.

3. Gum Incision
   The gum is gently lifted to access the root area.

4. Removal of Infected Tissue
   The damaged part of the root is removed, and the area is filled with specialized materials.

5. Stitching
   After the procedure, the gum is placed back and sutured.

Aftercare for Apical Resection

• Avoid hot foods and beverages during the first 24 hours.

• Regular use of prescribed painkillers and antibiotics is recommended.

• Avoid hard and chewy foods during the first few days.
